Between Two Fires - Part II

"I just wanna tell you that..." Narims voice dies out of the loudspeakers in the SGC. Sam quietly sighs and looks to the floor. It was obvious, that she could not help Narim without knowing the end of his message.

Hammond: "Let's bring the conference to an end."
SG-1 follows General Hammond, who's going upstairs to the Main Briefing Room.
Carter: " General, we must trie to find Narim."
Teal'C: "And we shouldn't forget that Tanith and his new ruler are a great threat for the
Tau'ri."
Hammond: "What do you think, Dr. Jackson?"
Daniel: "Well, without Narim it surely wouldn't have been possible for us to avert the threatening danger from earth. I think that we owe Narim something."
O'Neill: "Hey, if someone wants to know my opinion, I'd like to chase some Goa'uld."
Hammond: "Let's see what we can do for Narim. Major Carter, start working and trie to
decipher the end of Narim's radio-message. Colonel O'Neill, Teal'C, Dr. Jackson,
you'll go Major Carter at hand if possible. Break ranks."

Main Briefing Room, the next day

Carter: "General, unfortunately it wasn't possible for me to decipher Narim's radio-message. I suggest to send a UAV to Tollana, so that we can get an idea of the current situation there!"
Hammond:
"Wouldn't this be very risky? After all we aren't sure that Tanith isn't in
possession of one of those destructive weapons."
Teal'C
: "I hardly think that the Goa'uld are still there. In the case that the ion-cannons were
ineffective against the Goa'uld pyramid ship, the fight won't have to last long. In
all probability, the Goa'uld will have left the planet already."
Daniel:
"And finally we can make sure, that there is no sign of Narim in the vicinity of the
Stargate."
Hammond: "Well, ok. Major, prepare a UAV-sonde for take off to P3X-4474."

One hour later, the UAV transmits a scene of Tollana's destruction. The whole planet has been studded with bombs and the capital lies in ruins. There is nothing to be seen of any Goa'uld and there is no sign of life to be seen of any Tollan person.

Command Room

O'Neill: "General, Sir, let me travel with SG-1 to Tollana in order to search for any indications and tracks."
Hammond: "All right, but watch out for any danger. It's obvious but not 100 per cent clear that there are no Goa'uld left on the planet. You'll take off at 14.00."

At 14.00 sharp, SG-1 is standing armed and ready in front of the Stargate.
"Chevron 7 locked" it sounds off the loudspeakers from the Command Room. The wormwhole opens and Carter thinks back to her first meeting with Narim. She realizes how much Narim must have been in love with her. She takes a deep breath and walks after O'Neill, Daniel and Teal'C through the gate. At Tollana darkness expects SG-1. The dust, which was blown up because of the tremendous destruction has darkened the atmosphere. They all have to breathe hard.
O'Neill: "Any idea where to begin?"
Carter: "We first should look for some indications at the place where the Tollan spacecrafts stood, Sir."
Everyone sets of with a flashlight in his hand. When they arrive at the great hall where the Tollan spacecrafts once stood, they begin to search the ground.
Suddenly Carter cries out. O'Neill and the others hurry to her. On Carter's feet they can make out Travell's corpse, who, as it seems was killed by an falling down beam.
O'Neill: "Everything alright, Carter?"
Carter: "I think so, Sir, thank you. It was just the fright."
Teal'C (who was searching at a distance before Carter made the discovery): "O'Neill, we should examine the area over there a little bit more exactly."
O'Neill: "Well, I can't see anything here!"
Teal'C: "I can identify some tracks of a Goa'uld freighter. Probably Tanith has sent ground
forces, after the Tollan ion-cannons were destructed, to continue the battle on the planet-surface."
Carter: "Colonel, wouldn't it be possible that Narim and a few others hid from the batteling Jaffa in the freighter?"
O'Neill: "Carter, this is considerably improbable."
Teal'C: "I take it for quite possible. If the Jaffa troops leave the ship, no more than four guards stay behind usually. Beside, I have found some Jaffa over there, who died by the hands of men and not by the force of arms."
Daniel: "Even if Narim has managed to hide in the freighter, then he would be on board of a Goa'uld pyramid ship now and how shall we find this, not to mention how to get there?"

Jack is staring seriously faced into the dark sky, while Carter is looking at the ground. Suddenly a smile flits over her face.
Carter: "Well, Sir, we could ask the Tok'ra for help."
Teal'C: "I've just had the same idea."
O'Neill: "Daniel?"
Daniel: "We might as well try."
O'Neill: "Then let us return to earth in order to ask General Hammond for permission."

Back in the SGC SG-1 informs General Hammond about their discoveries and the idea of finding out more about the whereabout of the Goa'uld pyramid ship, on which Narim may have hidden.

General Hammond agrees and he lets Daniel send a message to the Tok'ra through the gate. Two hours later, a delegation of the ally, including Sam's father Jacob arrives in the SGC. Sam, who still grieves for Narim, bumps into Jacob and hugs him. Jacob is also happy to see his daughter after such a long time. In the Main Briefing Room, Daniel informs the Tok'ra about the new state of affairs. Selmak expresses, that it is also the request of the Tok'ra, to find Tanith and to eliminate him. Jacob invites SG-1 to travel with him to the new Tok'ra planet Revanna, to get the latest information there.

Tok'ra fortification on Revanna

At the Tok'ra fortification, SG-1 gets welcomed by Anise. O'Neill smiles at her and says nimbled to Carter: "Well, that's a good beginning!", remembering Anise's experiment with the Atanic armbands. Jacob and SG-1 are told by Anise that there is a Tok'ran spy on board of the Goa'uld pyramid ship, on which Tanith serves his new master.

According to the spy's report, not many people know who the new master really is. Only Tanith and a few guards are allowed to face him. The spy reported also that the pyramid ship has landed on P3X909, but that the Stargate is only modaretely guarded, because the Goa'uld don't expect any attack. This message makes SG-1 have new hopes to find Narim and to eliminate Tanith. SG-1 immediately travels back to earth with Jacob and 3 other Tok'ra, Behan, Lomar and Telka, in order to tell General Hammond about the new state of affairs.

Stargate Room

O'Neill: "General, it was possible for the Tok'ra to find the Goa'uld pyramid ship. I ask for permission to travel with SG-1 and the Tok'ra to P3X909 in order to rescue Narim.
Hammond: "Won't it be very risky to act on board of a Goa'uld pyramid ship?"
O'Neill: "Oh, General, Sir, finally we've made it already a few times and with the help of a little dynamite and the Tok'ras nothing will go wrong.
Hammond: " Alright. I'm not really convinced, but Narim was a good friend. So you can start at 0600."

Dr. Fraiser enters the Stargate Room
Carter: "Hi Janet!"
Fraiser: "Hi Sam!"
O'Neill: "Doc, what's up?"
Fraiser: "Well, General, before SG-1 goes on for further missions, I should examine them once more. The dust in the Tollana atmosphere could have affected their respiration organs and we also do not know if other toxic substances were released on the planet. Beside that, they all have been on duty for 24 hours. They should rest a little bit."
O'Neill: "Oh, General, is this really necessary?"
Hammond: "If Dr. Fraiser says so, I won't contradict her. Finally I am responsable for your health and the success of the mission. (to a Seargant, who's guarding the door): Seargent, escort the Tok'ra to our guest-quarters. SG-1, you accompany Dr. Fraiser to the medical station. The start of the mission will be put off to 10.00. Break ranks. (to Jacob, who already has turned away for leaving): Oh, Jacob, would you like to drink a coffee in my office?"
Jacob: "Even with pleasure. It seems to me as if I haven't had a hot swallow of coffee for ages."
Both of them leave the Stargate Room and the Seargent escorts the Tok'ra to their quarters. Carter, Daniel and Teal'C follow Dr. Fraiser. At last Jack leaves the room, grumbling, with a glance at the Stargate.

At 10.00 SG-1 and the Tok'ra are standing heavily armed and ready for marching off in front of the Stargate. Again from the loudspeaker of the command room it sounds "Chevron 7 locked" and again Sam has to think of Narim. She was very impressed that his house-computer was speaking with her voice, although she never had admitted that.

O'Neill: "Carter, everything's ok?"
Carter rouses from her thoughts: "I'm sorry Sir, I just had to think of
Narim."
O'Neill smiles sympathetically at her, feels for his dynamite-stock and says: "Well now, let us kick a few Goa'uld in their bottoms."
With that they all walk through the event-horizon.
At P3X909 it instantly comes to a gunfight with the four Jaffa, who are guarding the Stargate. Teal'C eliminates specificly two of the four attackers with his staff weapon. Jack eliminates one with his newiest MP too. But the last attacker hits Telka's shoulder. Crying out he drops on the ground and Carter, who reacts with lightning speed, safely hits the last Jaffa's breast.
While Jacob hurries to his team-member, the others take a look at the environment and secure the Stargate. They're located in the middle of a bare felled piece of earth. Around them there is a dense forest.
Jacob: "How bad is the injury?"
Telka (groaning): "My symbiot will be able to cure me, but leave me here, I'm just a handicap to you."
O'Neill: "Teal'C, help me to hide the corpses."
Jacob: "Alright, Behan, you'll stay here with Telka and secure the Stargate as well as possible."
O'Neill and Teal'C return from the nearby forest, where they have hidden the dead Jaffa scantily. Behan supports Telka and both set out in search for a suitable shelter.
SG-1, Jacob and Lomar set off to the pyramid ship. They all know that they haven't got very much time, until the next Jaffa-patrol will find the Stargate unguarded and will release the alarm. Even at great distance they can see the top of the great spacecraft, which seems to come up to the sky. At a slope, around 100 metres away from the ship, they take cover. O'Neill and Carter observe the ship through their binoculars. At the left outskirt O'Neill discovers a hatch. Only one Jaffa's located within sight around that hatch.
O'Neill: "Teal'C, would it be possible to get into the ship through that hatch?"
Teal'C: "That's quite possible. I will see to the Jaffa."
He vanishes into the forest which lies behind them. The five remainig ones are creeping causiously and constantly anxious of not creating any noise, further up to the ship. From a distance they hear that a Zat gets fired: Once, twice. Then it's silent. Without noticing it, Teal'C has joined them again.
Teal'C (whispers): "O'Neill, the Jaffa is eliminated. It seems as if the Goa'uld aren't afraid of any invadors. Everything is nearly unguarded. We can approach the hatch now."
Arrived at the hatch, O'Neill looks quickly but cautiously round the corner. In the inside of the ship, no Jaffa is to be seen. Jack points with two fingers to the right at Carter and Jacob, and to the left at Teal'C and himself. After his nod they secure the hatch from the inside and get into the ship. Carter, who realizes again how huge such a ship really is, takes a deep breath and asks her father: "Where on earth shall we begin to search?"
Jacob: "If he's got spotted, he might stay in the upper parts of the ship, where the detention-booths are. But if he has made it to hide the whole time, he formerly is most probably here in the lower parts of the ship."
O'Neill: "Alright, we'll form two teams. Teal'C, you'll search with Jacob and Daniel in the upper parts, Carter, Lomar and I will look around here. You'll have exactly thirty minutes."
Both teams begin with their search. While O'Neill, Carter and Lomar are roaming considerably unmolested through the lower parts, Teal'C, Jacob and Daniel have to take cover of some Jaffa-troops again and again. But at once, two unexpectedly coming up Jaffas discover Daniel, who has no possibility and no time to hide. They arrest him and drag him away. His two attendants keep back cautiously in order not to be discovered as well.
Teal'C signals to Jacob, that the detention-booths can't be so far away from their current position. After a few metres they already reach a big door, which seperates them from the booths. Teal'C pushes a sign in the wall downwards and the door-foldings disappear softly in the sides. Cautiously he looks around the corner. He indicates Jacob that one Jaffa's in the long corridor, which is lined with booths on both sides. With two specific Zat shots, Jacob can get rid off the Jaffa. The two set out for searching the booths all over for Narim and the disappeared Daniel.
Meanwhile O'Neill, Carter and Lomar are searching the storerooms all over for the Tollan. Now and then they have to take cover from some Jaffa-troops. In each storeroom, O'Neill puts up a charge of dynamite and adjustes the fuze to fife minutes. Finally they reach a storeroom, in which obviously only chests are standing. Carter is disappointed and very dejected and says to O'Neill: "Sir, he has to be found somewhere; we've nearly arrived at the end of the corridor." O'Neill, who puts up a charge of dynamite again, answers: "We'll find him, Carter, please don't worry."
Suddenly Sam hears a soft groaning: "Sir, have you heard that?"
O'Neill: "Have I heard what, Carter?"
Carter: "Well, I thought I've heard a groaning."
But again it seems as if a groaning comes out of one of those chests.
Lomar: "I have heard something as well. It has to come out of one of those chests over there."
Carter hurries to the chests and cautiously takes the lids off. In one chest she finds Narim, lying there half starved, died of thirst and slightly injured.
Carter (surprised and happy): "Narim, thank God, you're alive!"
Narim (who's holding, dazzled from the light of the flashlight directed on him, his hand in front of his eyes): "Samantha, it's nice to hear your voice."
O'Neill: "Are there still more Tollans on board?"
Narim (between two swallows of water he's drinking greedily of Sams bottle): "No, a few managed to escape with a hidden spacecraft from Tollana. I've hidden in a freighter and so I've got here."
O'Neill: "Well, come on folks, let's get going!"
Carter (to Narim): "Is it possible for you to stand up?"
Narim: "Yes, I think so, thanks."
O'Neill (into the radio set): "Teal'C, can you hear me?"
Teal'C: "I'm hearing."
O'Neill: "We've found Narim, let's return as fast as possible to the Stargate."
Teal'C: "Daniel has been caught. He's not in the detention-booths. We've to go and search him."
O'Neill: "Hurry up, in ten minutes the dynamite will blow up and then it will be quite uncomfortable here."
Jacob: "Don't worry about us."
O'Neill, Carter and Lomar, who're supporting Narim, hurry back to the hatch. O'Neill activates the dynamite. They manage to reach the slope without being seen.
O'Neill: "Lomar, just go on ahead to the Stargate with Narim. Carter and I will wait for Teal'C, Jacob and Daniel."
Carter and O'Neill squat down behind a few boulders and observe the Pyramid ship. O'Neill looks again and again a little bit disturbed at his watch. Only four minutes to the detonation.
Carter cries out quietly: "Look, Sir, that looks like a gun battle."
O'Neill: "Maybe, it seems to come from the upper parts where Teal'C and Jacob and perhaps Daniel might be at the moment."
Carter: "Let's hope that nothing will happen to the three."
Both watch how the gun-fire moves through the whole ship. Suddenly there's silence. Carter catches a breath and whispers: "Come on, Dad, you'll make it!"
Soon after, she and O'Neill hear the sound of the transportation rings. Teal'C, Jacob and Daniel stumble out of the rings. From everywhere armed Jaffas are thronging now. The three fugitives are running up to the slope. O'Neill runs to them to support Daniel.
O'Neill: "Oh, for crying out loud! Just one minute and it will explode!"
Carter: "Dad, hurry up!"
The four reach Carter and they all hurry to the Stargate. Behind them a loud 'bang' can be heard! The dynamite explodes. O'Neill looks back but behind him the top of the huge space-glider is still looming into the sky. The explosion wasn't powerful enough to destroy the whole ship. As soon as the Stargate comes in view, O'Neill shouts to Lomar, who has already reached the gate with Narim: "Lomar, dial the earth!!"

The Jaffa who are pursueing the five runaways are coming closer, because Daniel can't get forward so fast. Telka and Behan are running out of their hiding places to give covering fire. Beside Carter a salvo hits. She stumbles. O'Neill rushes to her: "Come on, Carter, we have to go!" He grips her arm and drags her with him. On the whole place around the Stargate the salvos hit now.
O'Neill: "Narim, Lomar, Telka, Behan, beat it, go!"
O'Neill, Carter, Jacob, Teal'C and Daniel are meanwhile running towards the open wormwhole. Teal'C gets hit at his arm. He loses his staff weapon. Carter sees death gliders approaching. Teal'C, who has stopped, picks up his weapon and shoots, while running, at the death gliders, which are already menacingly near. Carter runs as fast as she can. One step only and she'll be on earth. She feels how O'Neill pushes her into the wormwhole. The last thing she hears is O'Neill shouting: "Come on, Teal'C, hurry up!" Then she's on earth.
Dispairing she looks at the event-horizon. The seconds grow to unbarable long hours. Finally O'Neill, Daniel, Teal'C and her father Jacob stumble out of the Stargate.
O'Neill shouts: "Close the Iris!"
The Iris gets closed from the Command Room and they hear a few salvos splashing on the protective metal-layer.
O'Neill: "What the devil has happened to you?"
Jacob: "We found Daniel getting tortured from Tanith. Tanith was just pointing his ribbon device at him. Then he saw us but unfortunately he could activate his Personal Force Field Shield before we succeeded in eliminating him. We gripped Daniel and ran as fast as possible to the Transportation Rings."
Meanwhile Carter bumps into Narim: "I'm so happy that nothing bad has happened to you!" A tear runs down her cheek, which she quickly wipes off with the back of her hand.
Teal'C: "So Tanith is still a threat for the Tau'ri."
Through the loudspeakers General Hammond's voice sounds off: "Medical teams, immediately to the Stargate Room!"
After that, Hammond himself hurries to the homecomers. "Welcome back on earth. Fortunately everything seems as if you've got off lightly."

Dr. Fraiser enters the room with three paramedics and two stretchers.
Hammond: "Dr. Fraiser, take the injured to the medical station. The others can go to their quarters. The discussion of the mission will be held at 0800. (to O'Neill): Colonel, congratulations. It seems as if you've got off barely once more again."
O'Neill (with a roguish grin on his lips): "Thank you, General."
Hammond: "Break Ranks!"
By the paramedics, Narim and Daniel are layed on the stretchers and brought with Telka to the medical station while Teal'C leaves the room beside Dr. Fraiser. When Narim gets driven past Sam, he holds her arm: "Samantha, I want to thank you that you never have given me lost. Without you, it probably had been only a matter of time, until...."
Sam puts a finger on her lips, looks him full in the face, and with her smile in his eyes Narim vanishes out of her field of vision.
